Every car in the UK falls into one of 20 insurance groups. This, along with several other factors, helps insurance firms calculate your premium.
Although there is no fixed prices for each group, they are a good indicator of the price bracket insurance for a particular car would fall into. Group 1 is the lowest priced group, and group 20 is the highest.
Damage, cost of parts, and repair time
Taking into account the average accident damage and any areas the model is prone to damages, and how long it will take to repair. It also calculates the cost of parts for that vehicle.
Performance
Performance of a vehicle is a deciding factor in its insurance group too. Cars that are capable of high speeds and fast acceleration are also capable of sustaining more damage and costlier repair bills than a slower, less powerful car, hence the higher group usually assigned to the high-performance models.
Security
Cars that come fitted with standard security systems such as alarms, immobilisers or trackers are generally of a lower group than those without. However, if your vehicle doesn't have them as standard, you can still get cheap car insurance by fitting these yourself. Just remember to declare these or any other modifications to your current insurer.
